Qualifying originally as a marine engineer he was responsible for reorganizing and vastly expanding his library, from 40,000 to 340,000 volumes, and for removing it from its poor and inadequate accommodation at South Kensington to the Senate House. He compiled The libraries of London: a guide for students (1908, 2nd edition 1910). Its 3rd edition (1928) was retitled The student’s guide to the libraries of London with an account of the most important archives and other aids to study.
